Referencing is the compression of the source text (s) to the required size. On average, an academic essay contains from 15 to 25 pages of text, where it is necessary to fit the content of 5-10 sources on the topic. The material in the abstract is presented in an impersonal form from the point of view of the author of the abstract itself, i.e. the writer presents the content of the sources as he understands it. It is mandatory that the abstract should contain quotes from the refereed texts confirming or refuting a particular provision.
Semantic compression is the main method of referencing. It is assumed that the author of the abstract will highlight all the semantic reference points in the source texts and summarize them in the work.


When writing an abstract, you should follow the following rules:


1) to Be objective. This means that it is necessary to select sources for abstracting and present the material in accordance with the theoretical and practical significance of the source, and not with your own views and knowledge in this area. Personal opinion can be expressed in the conclusion of the work.
2) fully disclose the source being reviewed. That is, to reflect the essence and key provisions of the text and accurately convey its content.
3) Observe the unity of form. The abstract should be written in a scientific style and maintain a uniform order of terms and abbreviations.

Abstracting is not only applied to theoretical sources. An abstract in an educational institution can be set to describe the practical work of the student himself or his senior colleagues. The same requirements apply to a practical abstract as to a theoretical one.

The following written works can be distinguished as subspecies of the abstract itself:


Historical digression. It is devoted to a retrospective study of the problem presented in the title. In such works, sources about the history of the creation or development of a product, institution, or phenomenon are reviewed. The main milestones in the formation of the studied problem are reflected, and further ways of developing or studying the issue are outlined.
